Who is the Surgeon General?

In class the other week we got to talking about the Surgeon General and the warnings on certain products. That got me thinking, who is the Surgeon General and what do they do? Is it a committee or just one man/woman? "Rear Admiral (RADM) Boris D. Lushniak, M.D., M.P.H., is the Acting United States Surgeon General. Dr. Lushniak articulates the best available scientific information to the public regarding ways to improve personal health and the health of the Nation." According to surgeongeneral.gov, it is one man. The Surgeon General is responsible for protecting, promoting and advancing the health of the United States. Some of his roles also include immigration, disaster preparedness, national safety, health prevention, and other public health issues that our nation and our world face.

He has thousands of people working under him in hundreds of locations working anonymously to maintain the safety of our nation and world. Usually, Surgeon Generals are military men/woman and they have to have a lot of experience in public health. The Surgeon General is nominated by the President of the United States and the recommendation of his staff. Basically, the Surgeon General has to have wisdom and experience to take on the position that regulates the health of the people of our nation and people all over the world.
