Kentucky Teens and Drugs

Much like the Orange County Curtain that we saw in class last week, I believe that the serene landscapes of Kentucky is very similar. In the hills of East Kentucky we have a notorious band of people that run illegal moon shining businesses. Using the fresh stream water as a clean base and the thick woods as a perfect cover, these men and women create and sell hundreds of gallons a year. Just like its counter part, west Kentucky has had a history of producing and abusing methamphetamine. Since the hills of west KY are the ideal surroundings for a meth producer, teams of these people created large drug rings that superseded the meth importation from mexico. Now, as the law comes down on these criminals, they have decided to move their production to a new region of the state, much closer to our capitol and to a higher populated area. Northern KY is now the base of many methamphetamine producers and they are cranking out the drug faster and at a higher potency that before. With the drug more available, a lower cost is charged per fix and on top of that, their are more suppliers and distributors, making the drug more accessible to a wider and younger age group.

"Strawberry meth" looks and tastes a lot like the candy known as "pop rocks." It's got a strawberry flavor and scent, and it even pops in your mouth, just like the candy....Makers of "Strawberry Quick" are now using scent and taste to lure kids ages as young as 12 into trying meth....Louisville leads the state in the number of meth busts in 2007, with a total of 31 so far for the year."

As the producers of this drug keep making it more appealing to a younger population, we will start to see a higher amount of young people that are addicted and that die from over use or overdosing on this dangerous synthetic. As we follow this trend, Meth and its derivatives, are becoming the most dangerous illegal drug to teens in Kentucky
