The map above shows where the highest rate of prescription
drug abuse is, according to KASPER data in 2008. The area with the most is in
Eastern Kentucky. This area is apart of the Appalachian region and known for
it’s high poverty rates and isolation, being 40% rural.
Some factors contributing to drug abuse in Appalachia,
because of it’s high poverty and isolation include: Unemployment, ease of
availability from doctors, peer and family influences, and the cultural
acceptance of drug misuse in this area.
Drugs are the hidden economy is Eastern Kentucky. People are
selling to make money to pay the bills, not to make a profit. It’s become
accepted to be addicted to drugs in this area. With little activities for kids,
not much else is left to do. It’s these poor economic conditions that lead to a
higher drug usage rate.
It’s apparent more jobs are needed in the Appalachian area.
A better control over physicians and more activities for youth are needed to
occupy their time and keep them away from drugs. Addiction treatment programs
in rural areas should be also be increased.
