Kasper System
In class last week our guest speaker talked about the abuse of prescription drugs and who they have become more popular to abuse. During the presentation the speaker talked about an organization that is used to help control prescription drug abuse called the Kasper System. This system brought a question to my mind. In what instance does the Kasper System play as a positive benefit to help prevent prescription drug abuse amongst people age 28- 40 years old? What I found out was that this program took multiple approaches such as, stakeholder interviews, Survey of Kasper system users, Survey of Medicaid patient and providers, Analysis of Kasper use, and Analysis of national and Kentucky Medicaid data sets. Some of the findings that were found are that the survey of the Kasper users presented info stating that this system is an effective tool for reducing abuse and diversion as well as doctor shopping. “Over 90% of respondents in each group surveyed said this system is effective in preventing drug abuse. The article states that in 2009 5311 prescribes, 1057 pharmacists and 1242 law enforcement officials registered with the system. This article states that “the national data sets revealed that the distribution of controlled substances to Kentucky and its contiguous states agree and provide data stating that the Kasper system has been very effective in preventing the abuse of prescription drug users.”
