I personally have known someone who used heroin, but
I never suspected a thing. I wanted to understand the warning signs of Heroin
use to be able to help detect the problem sooner so they may get the proper
help in time.
According
to the Timberline Knolls residential treatment center website, it explains
that, “Heroin produces a “downer” effect that rapidly induces a state of
relaxation and euphoria (related to chemical changes in the pleasure centers of
the brain). Like other opiates, heroin use blocks the brain’s ability to
perceive pain.” The website also points out that heroin abusers will initially
be able to hide the signs and symptoms early on. I found this interesting,
because I always assumed that heroin, would be one of the easiest types of
drugs to detect, even right away.
There
are many signs of heroin abuse, but can be signs for many other drugs such as:
dry mouth, constricted pupils, disorientation, sudden changes of behavior or
actions, droopy appearance, and shortness of breath. The website also lists
many behavioral signs that can be linked with heroin abuse. This includes:
lying, avoiding eye contact, substantial increase in time spent sleeping,
slurred incoherent speech, sudden worsening of performance in school, decrease attention
to hygiene, withdrawal from family, hostile behavior toward loved ones, regular
comments indicating a decline in self-esteem, wearing long sleeves and long
pants to hide needle marks even if it is hot outside.
Physical
side effects may include: weight loss, runny nose, needle track visible, cuts,
bruises, or scabs from skin picking. If one lives with an individual who is
using heroin, one might find any of the following hidden at the house or
apartment: silver spoons, aluminum foil or gum wrappers with burn marks,
missing shoelaces, straws with burn marks, and small plastic bags with residue
on it.
Abusing
heroin is an extremely dangerous situation and it is very important to notice
the warning signs so that that person may receive the proper help in time.
