What are some factors that determine a person's tolerance to alcohol?

There are many factors that can influence your body's ability to absorb and tolerate alcohol. One factor is food. If you eat a meal before consuming alcohol, especially one that is high in protein, the time before you reach a peak BAC will be elongated. Another major factor is your gender. Women have less of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol; this leads to a higher BAC than men drinking the same amount. Mood is another factor. If you are feeling depressed, anxious, or angry, a change can occur to the enzymes that process alcohol in the stomach with in turn effects your tolerance. A third factor is fatigue. Being fatigued causes a lot of the same symptoms as being drunk, so consuming alcohol while being tired can intensify these symptoms. This is because the liver is not as efficient at processing alcohol in the body when one is overly fatigued. Another factor, which is probably one of the mos interesting, is alcohol expectancy. If you are going out and looking to get "drunk", you are more likely to do so even if everyone is drinking the same thing.Your expectations can actually influence your tolerance and cause you to be more "drunk"! These are just a few of the many factors that can influence your tolerance to alcohol. Knowing these factors can lead to a safer and healthier night out while drinking.
