As
our speaker mentioned last week (Jessica Miller) bath salts aren’t actually
bath salts. She explained the difference between them, but I wanted to know
what actually was in the drug “Bath Salts.” “Bath Salts” actually has nothing
to do with bath salts that you would use while bathing. The street name of
“Bath Salts” just occurred. It has other names such as well, but this one was
the one that caused all the confusion obviously. “Bath Salts” haven’t been
found to be addictive yet; there hasn’t been enough long-term research to
specify if they are. Cathinone is one of the main ingredients in making
“Bath Salts” along with several other drugs. Cathinone is very similar to
amphetamines, and comes from the Khat plants.
If
you remember that instance that occurred a few years ago in Florida, when a man
appeared to be a “zombie” it was stated that he was using “bath salts” when he
ate the victims face. After the autopsy it was found that the only drug inside
him was marijuana. So not all intendances are always the worst. A scientific experiment
was held to test the addiction of “Bath Salts” on rats. The rats
were given one dose then placed behind glass separated from the substance they
were just given. There is a button on their side of the glass that opens the
door to let them out usually, but it also is used as a counting device to see
how badly they want the substance. The rats pushed the button 900 times. Which is
4 times the amount they would of pressed while under the use of methamphetamine.
This shows us that this drug is very dangerous and uncontrollable.
