Why is it so harmful to mix alcohol with other drugs?
We all know that mixing most drugs with alcohol can be
very dangerous to our health, but what is the reasoning behind this? According to
one study, mixing a depressant with alcohol is the worst combination of mixers.
With alcohol being a depressant, combining two depressants has a synergistic
effect. This means that the combined effect of mixing these two drugs is higher
than the amount of drugs combined. The way they describe it is 1+1=3 when mixing
two depressants together. you take two substances, but get the effects as if
you had taken 3 substances. Alcohol also doesn’t mix with most prescription
drugs, and several over the counter drugs as well. The smartest thing one can
do while on medication is to refrain from the consumption of alcohol altogether.
If one were to decide to have a drink (or two) they should carefully read
labels on the medication they are currently taking. In most cases alcohol
consumption while on the drug is NOT SUGGESTED and can cause some serious side
effects to the user.
