In order to help someone quit smoking
or using tobacco products, you should start by sitting down with them
and explaining that you are concerned about their health. You must be
open to the fact that they may not want to quit. However, most
smokers do want to quit. Offer your help and support. Use a
combination of love and facts to present them with information and
alternatives.
To help them quit, you can help
eliminate triggers around the house. These include cigarettes and
lighters. You must always respect that it is the quitters health and
they are in charge. You can offer your help and support. You should
celebrate milestones along the way. Help provide alternatives, such
as the Nicotine patch, gum, or e-cigarettes.
There are also things that you do NOT
want to do to someone who is trying to quit smoking. Do not pressure
them into quitting by giving them an “all or nothing”. Do not
doubt the quitters' ability to quit. Don't judge or nag at them. This
is a process, and you are simply there to help if they want it.
Encourage them. Don't talk down to them, use anger, or use fear to
persuade them to quit.
You can offer your friend or family
member many resources including: Call the American Cancer Society at
1-800-227-2345 , 1(800) QUIT-NOW , and Smokefree.gov.
Smokefree.gov offers many services.
They help you make a plan to quit, identify triggers, deal with
cravings, withdraws, and slips, explain health concerns, why you
should quit, and how to help yourself quit.
