We've recently been discussing prescription drug use and non-prescription drug use in college students and athletes. I know drug use is a controversial issue in the U.S., let alone in college athletes but what about pregnant women. Women are told not to drink alcohol during their pregnancies, but what if they decide to smoke marijuana? Does it affect the baby the same way alcohol would? I decided to look into how marijuana would harm the baby or put the pregnancy in danger in any way.
Pregnant women are advised by their doctors to not take any drugs because it could harm the growing fetus. "Although one animal study has linked marijuana use to loss of the fetus very early in pregnancy, two studies in humans found no association between marijuana use and early pregnancy loss." There is a need for more research to fully understand the effects of marijuana use on pregnancy outcomes.
As to why someone would ever want to put their baby in harm's way blows my mind. It's common sense to avoid alcohol and drugs while pregnant but some women just don't care. I do believe there needs to be more research done but why would you even put the health of your baby at risk by smoking marijuana.
