Though I do not condone underage drinking, I understand that it happens. Anyone in or around a college campus would say that. It is undeniable and unavoidable; however, I want to know how college campuses can make the situation at hand the most safe that it can be. There are either dry campuses or wet campuses. The University of Kentucky is a dry campus, while Vanderbilt is a wet campus. I have always wondered which option is more logical and safe in protecting the lives of students. Here is what I found.
Dry campuses obviously don't mean dry, every student at the University of Kentucky can attest to that. There is drinking that happens every weekend all around campus whether it is allowed by the university or not. It happens. However, it is illegal to have the alcohol in the dorms and sorority and fraternity houses on campus, which brings about a misleading point. The problem is, this forces students to go off campus to consume alcohol, which leads to an increased rate of drunk drivers. This can lead to many DUI's and maybe even fatalities. It also provides the opportunity for the parties to be wilder because of the lack of University police and any sort of supervision.
Another point I had never thought of was the sense of community a wet campus can provide. A majority of students decide to move off campus after their freshman year because they are unable to have alcohol. Because of this, everyone moves off campus and the community that once existed within the halls of the dorms disappears because those people never see each other anymore. On a wet campus, people tend to stay on campus for more years, because they have more freedom. This increases the upperclassmen community that doesn't exist as strongly on a dry campus. This is seen pretty easily at UK as compared to a smaller liberal arts school that allows alcohol to be on campus for those of appropriate age.
When I used to think about this topic, I was very close-minded and thought that dry campuses were the only logical option. However, the more I read, the more I understand that it may not be all it is cracked up to be. I understand the advantages of the wet campus, and almost see more benefits on that side than the dry side.
