Many people have debated whether or not marijuana is considered a gateway drug or not. The usage of the term "gateway" insinuates the idea that an early drug leads to other drugs later in life. Alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana are typically the first drugs used when people try a drug. People believe that marijuana opens the door to more illegal drugs that people will eventually try. People who abuse illegal drugs, have normally tried marijuana first. Research has shown that it is not entirely true that most marijuana users go into other drugs, yet marijuana can pose significant health risks including the risk of drug addiction. Marijuana is a plant smoked in order to get the feeling of being buzzed or high. Due to a long time of using marijuana, people began to not be able to get "high" anymore or it takes them large amounts of marijuana to get high. Therefore, people can then move onto more serious drugs such as heroine and cocaine. Research does prove that most users of hard drugs have experimented with marijuana at an earlier age.
